Those Worthless Words
They batter and bruise them;
Tear away their meaning …
Substitute these crystal lines
With something more demeaning.
‘Enchanting’ gives way to ‘it's like, nice’
And rhyming become scheme….
(Ignorant they are toward
Their demolition of regime.)
As instruction fires the pistol
Into the race, they won’t take part…
Derision detaches mind from matter,
Verse from meaning, words from art.
I stare at their mistaken lines,
Their tender words: my failing mirth…
Yearning for a poet
more deserving of their worth.
