Those Worthless Words

Poetry By: Ashleigh Butcher
Poetry

As pathetic as it is to gain inspiration from my so-called learning institution, i happen to to feel quite strongly about this matter. "Write some poetry, do it now"--- a line that could open the door into a world of free expression, simply stands as a way to mock all that i hold so dear. Words. Beautiful clusters of letters.... Things that should not exist to rhyme 'cat' with 'mat' and 'sat', and mock things like teachers and homework.

I wish they could just...understand.

Those Worthless Words

They batter and bruise them;

Tear away their meaning …

Substitute these crystal lines

With something more demeaning.

'Enchanting' gives way to 'it's like, nice'

And rhyming become scheme….

(Ignorant they are toward

Their demolition of regime.)

As instruction fires the pistol

Into the race, they won't take part…

Derision detaches mind from matter,

Verse from meaning, words from art.

I stare at their mistaken lines,

Their tender words: my failing mirth…

Yearning for a poet

more deserving of their worth.
