Reflex
By: Joe Attanasio
A reflex is involuntary you see
And instantaneous as can be
Reaction in response to a stimulus
And that’s what I want to discuss
When something flies at the eye
We instinctively close it to get by
When a punch aims for our head
We jerk and duck down instead
When a hammer hits our thumb
We automatically cuss some
When someone makes us mad
We say and do things that are bad
We don’t stop and think
We don’t even pause to blink
We respond with record speed
We react to make them bleed
When you have known them very long
You push the button you know is strong
You need to end with the upper hand
You want to be the last to stand
You must learn to slow down
Take your time and look around
Count from one to ten
Then think about it again
Don’t fly off the handle
Don’t invite a scandal
Carefully choose your words to say
Or just let their comment lay
How many times, just as you said it
You immediately want to admit
You are sorry and didn’t mean to say
What you did, and it won’t go away
