Eighteen years old, and off to war
Hearing stories of blood and gore
12 weeks training, then into the throes
Are we ever really ready, who knows
*
Family and friends waiting back home
Concerned that we are all alone
Nervous and unsure, we find a friend
To watch over each other’s rear end
*
Focusing on the task at hand
Survival, we all understand
Bonding to become a team
Each person sharing a dream
*
Do your job, watch your back
Pull your weight, never slack
Show good spirit, tell a joke
Give friends a soothing stroke
*
Make the best of it you can
Comfort each and every man
You’re never really all alone
Love and honor is often shown
*
It does not take long to learn
That everyone will not return
War will always claim its toll
With the dead, and not quite whole
*
Your thoughts and prayers from home
Comfort soldiers to feel less alone
Remember the ones who died
With loving memories and pride
************
My heart goes out to all the veterans and families of veterans,
May the world always remember the sacrifices these people made.
