Thick Skin

By: Joe Attanasio 2011

Having thick skin means you don't scar much,

It does not mean you don't feel anything.

When people throw the hatchet at you,

It bounces off, you only get a nick.

Thick skin does not stop you from hearing,

But, it mutes most the damage.

Thick skin can scare off the intruder,

Your armor seems too formidable.

Thick skin can comfort the weak around you,

A shining example of invulnerability.

Thick skin is not apathy,

It is strength and confidence.

Thick skin encourages bravery,

You know you will always survive.

Thick skin is your first defense,

Your will and fortitude the rest.

Thick skin grows from confidence,

Self-esteem, inner peace.

For those of us with thin skin,

Dig deep within and resolve.

Admit to yourself, you will survive,

Be true to yourself, accept responsibility.

Plant your roots and nourish your soul,

Like the great oak tree that stands alone.

You will grow thick skin like bark,

To protect you true and through!
