There's a picture on the wall that I can't read--
these lines some foolish artist used to mar your perfect face.
Time never had the strength, my love, to steal away your grace;
it can cut your heart but cannot make it bleed.

It's been too long since last I stood within these walls,
since last I faced the thought that you are never coming back
and all these years I've numbed the pain and didn't count the lack.
I watched the rises but I couldn't face the falls.

Tonight these stars shine down on something less than whole;
I’m coming back to find a part of me has gone away.
This broken house was never home, but here I know I’ll say
until I find the missing piece of my own soul.

There's a sorrow in my heart that I can't feel--
a missing piece of something that was never part of me.
I'm so afraid of finding something I can never see
but the wounds you cannot find are hard to heal.

I can't believe I wasn't there to watch you die;
I couldn't watch you go and now I can't believe you're gone.
I never saw the sunset; now how can I face the dawn
without the feeling that it's just another lie?

Tonight these stars shine down on something less than whole;
I’m coming back to find a part of me has gone away.
This broken house was never home, but here I know I’ll say
until I find the missing piece of my own soul.

There's something in that picture on this empty wall;
there's something in the dreams I've had since I first lost my way.
My heart is like a broken compass leading me astray
but finding my way home to you right through it all.

It's too late now to face the thought of nothing more
and it's too cold to face the night with no one at my side.
I've run, I've run, my darling, now I have no place to hide,
I can only lay here broken on the floor.

A war has raged within my heart these many years,
so long that I cannot imagine ever finding peace.
On every page within my heart, there is a shallow crease
now made into a well to hold these unshed tears.

Tonight these stars shine down upon a broken soul.
I'm coming back to find a part of me has gone away.
This broken house was never home, and here I cannot stay
where you and I together never made a whole.

Tonight these stars shine down on us, one broken soul.
I came back home to find that I had never gone away.
We lost each other, darling, but we never lost our way;
two broken halves together can still make a whole.

Tonight I've found the missing pieces of my soul.
I've found the missing pieces of my soul.

Bitter Irony:

Interesting rhyming scheme. Your postings deserve more in the way readership and attention. This one ends most hopefully. Bespeaking a different attitude and/or outlook on your part. Perhaps!

Happy trails,

Ed Bradley.

Author Comment:

Yes, I'm trying to add some more hope to my poems. :-) My outlook on life is getting more hopeful, but for some reason, it's still hard to convey in my poetry...maybe I've fallen into a creative rut as far as endings are concerned. Thanks for the comment!
