You’ll always be my little princess
Standing on top of your castle in a dress
And I’ll always be your one hand knight
Fighting off all the dragons and ogres that bite
And one day you’ll be all grown up and moved away
And I’ll have nothing left to say
Except all the things you’ve heard before
That I adore you
I can remember you playing in the snow
Your cute gum boots making you slow
I wait for you to run and catch up
So that we can ski down the mountain with our cups
You would be playing so well in the cold
I would look at you and try not to feel old
I remember being so young at your age
I can’t help but start to feel myself missing those days
And one day you’ll grow up into your early teens
Getting a job and trying on new jeans
You’ll be hanging with your girlfriends
Boys will start to notice and try to make amends
And you’ll be sixteen years old and dancing around your room
Waiting for the new boy to zoom his brand new car into our yard
And I’ll be standing at the door holding your hand
Looking down at the boy who you tell me is in a band
You’ll go on your first date and I’ll be waiting up late
Checking the clock, watching like a hawk
You’ll come in all excited
Telling me about the way you were absolutely delighted
Then there will be the stage that you hate me
And the way all your friends start to flee
Everything’s changing and you can’t seem to handle
I’ll still be there helping you light back the candle
Then comes your first heart break
The way that you will cry into my shoulder
Smouldering all of your feelings down in the fire
Breaking both of our hearts as we watch it die with a spark
Then comes your wedding day where I’ll be the one giving you away
You’ll walk happily down the aisle; I’ll be shaking my head in denial
Then you say all of your vows and I know that it’ll all be ok
And you’ll look at me and I’ll wanna say...
Do you remember the way you would play in the white snow?
With your little gum boots making you slow
Every little step you would try to take
I would laugh at your little frame making its way
Now you’re all grown up with your new husband and a baby
Running around and acting like such a lady
Coming to me and asking for advice
I would just smile and say it’s quite a price
And when I will look at you and think to myself
‘God you’re so grown up, what happened to my little elf?’
You’ll have your own life and will no longer need me
And I’ll walk away as happy as can be...
Because you’ll always be my little princess
Standing on top of your castle in a dress
And I’ll always be your one hand knight
Fighting off all the dragons and ogres that bite
And one day you’ll be all grown up and moved away
And I’ll have nothing left to say
Except all the things you’ve heard before
That I adore you
