Parenthetic (Smiles)
My smile has been elusive
Thanks for asking why’s
I crack a smile illusive
No crackinground the eyes
That’s better than sardonic
Or a prideful smirk
Sweeter than acerbic
My act needs some work
But I ain’t no actor
And crow’s feet tell the tails
Smiling no small factor
Along too happy trails
Now a bleak and viscous bog
Not paved with hopes nor fears
Redaunted yet again I slog
I lubricate with tears
Whoever said a frown
Is harder on the face
Was thinking upside-down
A Pollyanna case
They think they know it all
Cheer up it’s not so bad
As if I were a doll
What fun we could have had
Today I am half empty
Or half full of air
Yesterday just moody
Tomorrow’s never there
Now that can be confusing
To those who like just so
But I will never losing
Both sides now yet ago
When I heard Joni sing
Of clouds and Ferris wheel
This little prince was king
Of vast deep heights unreal
Conceived to know extremes
Before the early times
I had to smile it seems
The actor merely mimes
See I don’t want to cause you pain
Don’t listen to my words
I’m only trying to explain
Three quarter time in thirds
Black on white is balanced
While feelings ebb and flow
I don’t understand it
And you don’t want to know
