lying with loneliness

quietly
loneliness crawls into my bed and lies next to me
alone and sad i feel my despair consume me

i remember
the warmth of her body lying next to mine
the sweet scent of her hair
a flower in spring
her soft touch
a summer breeze through tall grass

i hold her body so tenderly to mine
our hearts beating as one
peaceful and calm
i feel her body rise and fall with each breath

remembering
that's what gives loneliness its teeth
it bites deep and cold
opening the wound as if it had never closed
yes
it's still there
i had just forgotten for a little while
my soul still bleeds from that wound

now
lying next to me is the loneliness
loneliness that has no warmth
no scent
no touch
no heartbeat
only frozen emptiness
