Take me in the Autumn

don't take me in the Spring

when all the earth is filled

with new life burgeoning.

When the bravest Snowdrops

turn their faces to the sun

let me be there,watching.

Don't let my days be done.

When my wintry soul

revives with warmth anew

Let me feel that joyous thrill

Like I always used to do.

Then when Summer sweeps in

and the air shimmers with the heat

Let me be there in the garden

In my same old wrought iron seat.

When the sun is just an oily splodge

and the lakes are oh,so blue

let me see the jewel colours

of my flowers specked with dew.

Don't take me in the Summer

when the garden is beguiling

when my old bones move freely

and my face is always smiling.

Then when Autumn slides in

at the Summer's end

while slanting sunrays touch the earth

Treat me like a friend.

Gently lead me to my rest

while the leaves all change their hue

let me curl up quietly

like I used to do.

Take me in the Autumn

don't leave me here alone

where Winter's icy fingers

can nip at my old bones.

Take me in the Autumn.
