America! The Free!

Poetry By: EdwardJBradleySr

Dedication: To all U.S. Military Veterans and in commemoration of the annual American national holidays of Memorial Day (last Monday in May), Independence Day (July 4) and Veteran’s (Armistice) Day (November 11).

While surfing the YouTube website to find some original recordings of old(ies), pre-Beatles rock ‘n’ roll songs, I came across some recordings of “Scotland, The Brave”, the music of which has always appealed to me.

Over the years, many popular song lyrics have been set to this musical tune. For example, in 1955, the Ames Brothers had a hit recording entitled: “My Bonny Lassie”

A more recent recording, with new lyrics, was rewritten and performed by John McDermott of “Irish Tenors” fame.

The John McDermott recording is most inspirational, heart-rending, captivating and exceedingly well performed. So much so, in fact, it inspired me to adapt some of John McDermott’s lyrics as well as adding lyrics of my own to compose a new poem or lyrics, sharing a similar theme, but with a different focus. In my version, “Scotland, The Brave” has become “America! The Free!” and was written with the idea it could be accompanied by the music from “Scotland, The Brave”.

America! The Free!

Edward J. Bradley

Others may boast of their grand ancient cultures!

Their books, their music and historical ties!

Nations destroyed by tyrants and vultures!

Where liberty died! Due to treachery and lies!

America's environs wild! Where patriots always smile!

Blessed with abundance! Mean much more to me!

With sun, rain and cloud! Where fertile fields are plowed!

Home of the brave and proud! Land of the free!

All freedom has come from America's great courage!

Even for her enemies! From prior war!

The rest of the world! Would still be in bondage!

With Hunger! Disease! Slavery! and More!

Shining bright! From God's Holy Mountain!

Spirit of America! Fearless and Free!

Red, White and Blue! Waves o'er stream and fountain!

As strongly She stands! Watching over the seas!

See how strongly! Her freedom's advancing!

Destroying all tyranny! Found in it's path!.

Her sons and Her daughters! Like bright lights dancing!

Ignoring the stench of both ruin and death!

Like Her frontier wild! She has serenely smiled!

When armies and empires! Against Her were hurled!

Hard! As Plymouth Rock! Absorbing ev'ry shock!

From Germany! Japan! and Islam's world!

Brave patriotic tunes! Played over bloody tombs!

Red! White! and Blue! Still Her colors wave!

Salutes from rifles peal! For Her wills of steel!

Triumphant! On battlefield! America! The Free!

Triumphant! On battlefield! America! The Free!
