I learnt how to love you,
The best thing I ever did.
After all the things you put me through,
After all the things you said.
I learnt how to love you,
The hardest thing I ever did.
So I could learn how to smile again,
And you could learn how to be good.
I learnt how to love you, for you,
By telling you what you were doing was wrong,
It took a long time before I was that strong.
I learnt how to love you,
Made you angry one last time,
For once it wasn't just me who cried.
I don't know if I broke your heart or just hit you in the face.
To me you did both, I wanted you happy.
I wanted to laugh again without having to pretend or forget anything.
I knew within a short space of time you'd find somebody else to hold you, somebody who could trust you afresh.
It killed me to think of you with somebody else while I knew I would be alone.
It still does.
But I did it for you, I did it for love.
After a long time of being afraid and taking it,
I learnt how to say no.
I learnt how to love you,
Because I learnt how to let you go.
