What is it that holds me down?

What is it that holds me down?
Shivering with a sarcastic frown,
Hiding my shattered expression,
Drowning my mute confession.

What is it that holds me bound?
Ruined and nailed to the ground,
Sought after but never found.
No words uttered. No sound.

What is it that keeps me sane?
In lieu of impassable bane,
Chance favours the belligerent.
Don't judge me! I'm innocent.

What is it that keeps me resolute?
An empathetic soul versus a brute.
Patience! Keep your mind astute.
Even a withering tree can bear fruit.
