Racing a sailing yacht on Sydney Harbour

In the groove ..

Sails set perfectly
Watchful eyes gaze windward
Every knock, each black gust
sweeping towards us
Up,up ...
Now ..
There ... hold
Just there ...

Hold .. hold ...down DOWN ... now
hold

Tuned exactly
each wire
each halyard
each setting..
perfected for this wind
on this exact boat
at
this
exact
time.

All around other eyes
gaze towards us
looking, searching
for some small
advantage

Some small
mistake

To be pounced on
as an
advantage

Nose comes round
edges up
smothering the
boat beneath
wind smooth in our
sails
is staccato in theirs.

Stalling for a second
their onward rush

Just enough
for us

Just enough to edge ahead
enough
so counter measures
become irrelevant

And we forge on
searching for the next
foe

In swishing waves
In spectacular
scenery
that washes past our gaze

With the Sydney sun
blasting into the landscape
Casting everything
into stark brilliant
searing relief.
