Childhood Weekends

Poetry By: Gift Of Noni
Poetry

Childhood Weekends is a poem/song about my childhood visits to my grandfather's New Hampshire cottage. Several chapters of my novel "Center of the Universe" (Pa's Cottage, Liberty Street and Timmy's Tree House)are based on the wonderful times I enjoyed at the cottage.

I remember mom and I remember dad
and I remember all the fun that we all had
Riding in the car and singing all the way,
going up the road to our country get-away

It didn’t take long, it didn’t take much time
We’d soon leave the cares of the city behind
Passing all the farms as our wagon rolled along
Till we finally hit the road that went down to Captain’s Pond

I remember childhood weekends
And the life that we all lived
I remember my whole family
And the love we had to give

How I miss those summer weekends
And how we lived without a care
And if ever there was a heaven
I guess I grew up there

I remember rock and I remember roll
Playing from a radio down by the swimming hole
We’d be swimming all day till our parents called us out
For another barbeque that’s what life was all about

Sitting on the porch as the day came to an end
The crickets sang a chorus and the bull-frogs all joined in
We’d gather round the table and oh the games we played
And I couldn’t get to sleep waiting for another day.

I remember childhood weekends
And the life that we all lived
I remember my whole family
And the love we had to give

How I miss those summer weekends
And how we lived without a care
And if ever there was a heaven
I guess I grew up there
