THE DESERT ROSE

Poetry By: Graeme Montrose
Poetry

A poem. In the heart of the hot dry sand was found an oasis of delight, from the midst of the dry desert of music came the refreshing Fairuz to bring water to the dearth

THE DESERT ROSE
The desert sands stretched endlessly
The blazing sun shone down
The winds blew hot the sand whirled round
A sandstorm lay in front
A blazing inferno by mid day
No sign of life I saw
And then the vision came to me
An oasis oh so pure
Trees to shelter from the sun
Dates to nibble on
Water fresh and pure to drink
Heaven had arrived
So it was throughout the lands
A desert hot and dry
No music in the Arab world
Just the hot dead sand
Years of musical dearth dried us
Our souls were shrived so
Now our lowest ebb did reach
We sweltered in the sun
Then like cloudburst she did come
A fresh vibrant voice arrived
From out of flower strewn garden fields
Upon snowy cedar slopes
Notes of joy were heard by all
All weapons thrown away
Men did weep to hear such words
Nostalgic notes resound
Before my eyes I saw it clear
The almond tree in bloom
An angel of the Lord came down
With beauteous love filled heart
Fairuz, her name, a name we love
Her voice an angel's song
From Lebanon's pale shores she came
To enflame thirsty hearts
Jabal al Arz, Zuqaq el Blatt
She came from Beirut's streets
Nouhad she was born - Fairuz reborn
Enraptured hearts worldwide
Fleyfel did nurture, Halim compose, 'Itab established
A waif of beauty, voice from above
Her songs struck millions' chords
From folklore unto modern songs
She cast her sensual spell
Banned she was but not deterred
More popular she became
Songs so sad and yet defiant
A flower neath desert sun
A rose amongst the jagged thorns
Her haunting web she wove
'First Lady' soon she then was dubbed
As Music's crown she took
With words of love and songs fire
To melt the hardest stone
Her songs they chimed, freedom, freedom
They captivate the soul
From USA unto Europe's shores
Her songs did soon resound
The hearts of those who heard her sing
Were ever more enslaved
Her hauntingly passionate songs
Drove them into ecstasy
Even the 'Civil War' could not destroy
What beauty she instilled
Her songs did build a bridge
Mosque and church agreed
Her voice it came from heaven's shore
Transcended just mere words
Her voice and beauty captivates
Her music lifts us high
As still today we hear her sing
More listeners flock to her
Her voice angelic thrills our hearts
She mesmerizes us
