The Saddest Words
‘If I only had’
The saddest words, they say are these
Alas! Now gone! Passed on! Now lost; the same
Remorse regret are hard to bear
Like vultures gather round
To tear a piece of you they come
Beware! let them not stay
Despair, discouragement, oh vile
Depression, death also
The deadly “D’s” they say they are
For pain and misery bring
The mind - the battlefield I say
For there the war takes form
Each day and hour, each minute long
We fight and win or lose
It is a war - no prisoners take
And only one shall win
The past is gone, can not return
But only in your mind
Replay, rewind, replay
A thousand million times
In each you see what could have been
And sink but further down
Yet on and on you play again
Your thoughts rewind once more
The never-ending stairway down
That leads - but down to death
Release you hope, from torments grip
A way to ease the pain
Yet all the while there was unseen
A route out from the pit
To reach above - to grasp anew
Love’s light that always shines
The future waits
You can begin - stand up and start again
