The Portrait
A candle flickered in the night,
The lovers kissed once more,
Eloise and Roland found romance,
They married the next day.
Vivid strokes on canvas white,
Nearby the rough wild sea.
Eloise poised there by the wall,
Roland painted her.
Beauty oozed out from his brush,
Colours changing hues,
Wondrous portrait - summer sun,
Spain in '22.
Bombs explode and planes they rage,
War up in the clouds.
Soldiers fight, civilians die,
The world at war again.
In Antwerp Col Hoffman came,
To meet in attic bare,
A Jewish dealer of the arts,
A secret rendezvous.
He bought a painting very cheap,
The dealer got his life.
Another time another place,
The years they still roll by.
Franz Reinhardt married Hoffman's niece,
The painting they acquired.
Moved home to Venice after war,
New business they began.
In '88 Frau Reinhardt died,
The painting moved to France.
Her granddaughter took it with her there,
She married Pierre De Pruex.
Richard Du Cane from Cape Town came,
He brought his bride with him.
Françoise her name a writer known,
Both now live in New York.
She saw the painting paid for it,
A price beyond belief,
One million dollars all in cash,
The painting moved once more.
Françoise did sit within her room,
A tear formed in her eye.
She looked upon the painting fair,
Her tears now freely fell.
Roland the painter, oh she knew,
He was her great grandpa,
And Eloise the girl in paint,
Her great grandma she was.
The years had passed the wheel had turned,
The end - beginning merge,
The painting now survived it all,
It found its way back home.
A candle flickered in the night,
Françoise sat in the dark,
Eloise and her could twins have been,
The painting looked like her.
