MY FRIEND HAS ASKED ME IF I WOULD WRITE A POEM FOR A VETERAN OF WORLD WAR 2 WHO WILL BE 90 YEARS OLD IN A FEW WEEKS. THE CONTENT WILL SPEAK FOR ITSELF.

Days of capture, hunger, longing,

Long since gone, but memories never fade.

A stolen youth, never to be recaptured

But the treasured gift of friendships that were made.

From camp to camp in trucks not fit for cattle,

Thirst and hunger part of everyday.

The smell of death that told us, Oh! so sadly.

That one more brave friend had just passed away.

They tried so hard to kill our spirits daily,

They didn't know that we would never fall,

Our Country called and we were there to answer,

From Boy to Man, we stood, and we stood tall.

They didn't die in vain, our lost heroes,

We'll tell their story each days of our life.

We'll recall the sorrow and the laughter,

We'll tell of war, hardship and strife.

With the battle won we travelled homeward

With feelings both of sadness and of joy,

We'll fly the flag with pride and will remember,

Our comrades lost, every man and boy.
