The Veteran’s Song

It occurs to me quite a lot I suppose,
Even after all these years.
The memories come and then they go,
So I’m not sure at all why,
In my mind’s eye-
I see every scene,
I feel all the tears.

And really you mean nothing more to me,
Than an experience I once lived through-
Just a faded road in my history.
So I ‘m not at all sure why,
That in my mind’s eye-
I see my heart has forgiven, as is due-
But my mind can’t forget you.

Maybe I feel a necessary lesson was learned,
Way back in that other life-
Falls under the category,
Where purple hearts are earned.
So this might be at least one reason why,
In my minds eye-

If I ever again see the warning lights
(Instead of sleeping through the days
And crying through the nights)
I’ll do anything different
(Anything at all
To avoid that decent
From such a stumble to quite a fall)
And to glide past safely
Not to collide
Fast and fatally
Headlong into the suffering
Of the untold doubt in myself
And the tearing and ripping
That at your hands I felt

Yes this is why in my mind’s eye-
I remember false hopes,
Turning to silence for days.
Yes these are the signs,
These are the wages,
Where you let another,
Turn your esteem of everything
Into a nothing haze
But now in this little life of mine
I’ll recognize the signs
And not waste my time
On any of the whys
That lie behind my mind’s eyes
On what is really love in vain
Always rifled with guilt and pain.
