A Saddening Burden

Poem By: ixluvx2xwritex2
Poetry

I wrote this for a creative writing class, and loved what came out. We were asked to make an abstract word...like love...concrete...like chair. Its gotten me through many a horrible day, and I hope it can do the same for you if you need it. Hope you like! View table of contents...

A Saddening Burden
People say there are numerous steps of grief including: shock, denial, anger, guilt, and acceptance. Grief may be those things, but it is much more.
Grief is learning there was an accident at camp. Grief is getting an alarming phone call about someone you love. It is going to a funeral to remember someone important. Grief is walking in the door to see your crying family. Grief is not being able to sleep from fear of dying yourself. Grief is wondering why even though your world stops, the sun still rises and sets.
Grief throws your heart to the ground and smashes it. After a while, grief becomes your silent dancing partner, waltzing across an empty floor. It drives you insane with its poisonous whispers of misery. It pulls your broken consciousness back together as its own creation. It drags your body through the haunting days as a zombie. The pain engulfs your mind as a warm blanket to escape into. Grief is not being afraid to cry every once in a while. Grief is being angry because life isn’t fair. It’s forcing you to smile as though nothing happened. Grief is asking yourself what you did to deserve this. Grief is finding what you’ve been given after what has been taken away. Grief is not knowing what could have happened if they had been here. Grief is wondering if you will ever wake from this nightmare.

I'm so sorry for you. My dad died the summer of my eigth grade year, and I wrote this in 11th grade for a creative writing class. Thankd for your kind comments.

This is powerfully written. The pain and confusion comes through so strongly. Based on the story in your profile, it seems you had to grow up a great deal sooner than you should have. I'm glad you have your faith and your writing for the hard times. They can make so much difference, not only in your life, but through the lives you touch, as you've touched mine.

Thank you for such a heartfelt comment. The poem is not actually about my dad, but about a friend who died this summer in a rollover car accident. Thank you again for your wonderful comment. I wish there were more people like you in the world!!

Grief is a part of our lives and you have expressed this so beautifully. I think all we can learn to do is not to let it take over our lives although it does step in for long periods. I have grieved many loved ones and sometimes I must stop and remember how lucky I was that they were a part of my life for however long or however briefly. How lucky I was that they were born, that I knew them, that they were "mine". Keep writing.

Thank you so much for such a kind comment. I feel your pain, and wrote this soon after my father passed away. It was hard for me to do, but I'm glad that so many people can benefit from readint it. Thanks again for your kindness.

Anyone who has last someone close to them knows exactly what you are talking about. I think this was beautifully done.

Thanks. The poem just kind of flowed out of me, and it fit the qualifications of an enlish assingnment!

This is beautiful. It is sad indeed when someone you love, care about, and trust leaves this world before you do. Grief is a natural emotion, yet is the most misunderstood. Losing someone is inevitable but that doesn't make the pain hurt less.

Hey ixluvx2xwritex2 :) I've been meaning to comment on one of your writings for a while now, and I just found time....wow. Anyways, this is a great piece that really demonstrates your writing talents. You analyze the notion of "grief" very well and you thoroughly explain what you believe it is. This is all done very eloquently and with a lot of wisdom behind it. I'll definitely have to keep my eyes out for your new stuff! Take care, Regan
