Who They Say You Are

Poetry By: Jackie Carani

Being forced into a role that those people deem you worthy, and never being able to break free of that place.

Always doubting. Always questioning.

Never smiling. Never thriving.

Forever on the edge of despair.

Impossible to be anything than what you see in the mirror.

Never confident. Never really there.

Always hideous. Always invidious.

Impossible to break free of the insult they believe you are.

Forever cringing under their stare.

Always wondering when it will end. Always inquiring why it began.

Never standing. Never fighting.

Forever taking a beating of the heart and soul.

Impossible for others to see its toll.

Never believing. Never achieving.

Always hunting for a way out. Always hoping someone will hear your shout.

Impossible to escape the comfort of the basin.

Forever tramping towards your expiration.

Maybe that will be your salvation.
