THE TURMOIL OF ROMANCE

A tempest raging in the eye of a cyclone

Around and around she tumbled and twirled

Love and bliss wrestling despair and hate

Genius and strength portrayed as folly and want

The power within means more than she dares believe

Perception once again assumes reality

Teetering on the brink of the epiphany

She plots her schemes of guilt and fear

Maneuvers through intrigues of desperation

 Weaving spells of romance’s redemption

The unicorn enchants the serpent

Staggers against the radiance of his charms

Answers and questions playing together

Their fun a game of guesses

Reward lurks in the obvious

Its moment is nearly at hand

Then the joker steals time

Conclusions become another contest of shadows in the murk

Fate reveals that the unicorn is really a sphinx

Destiny prompts the serpent to transform himself into an eagle

He flies with her toward the hinterlands of hope and doubt

Their aerial ballet remains a spectacle of illusions

Yet the gravity of faith keeps them locked in mutual orbit

Wishes pose as truth

Dreams suggest substance

How then shall discrepancy reconcile with purpose?

I liked it, but wow, a lot of difficult words, and lots of lyrical prose.
You can read a lot into this poem.

Thank you for your comments. You are right about it. There is more in it than quickly meets the eye or psyche.

Thank you for your comments. I apologize for the haughty language in it. I was not trying to be a smart aleck. My intention was to word it so that it would convey various levels of meaning--be multi-dimensional.

By the way, the peom was orginally written as the overture of the second part of a book--Zizag. It is a story about political intrigues and spies. The unicorn is a lady suddenly thrust into a position of great authority and responsibility. The snake is her former lover. He slithers back into her life at a critical juncture in her new career. She loves and hates him with equal passions. Her dilemma revolving around him pivots on the questions: Is he truly sorry that he once broke her heart? Does he love her as much as he claims? And is he willing to make amends and heal the wounds that he so callously inflicted, while betraying the monsters that sent him to work against her? Their story is one major plotline in a story of intertwining plotlines.
