Facing Reality, a poem by Jason George

Poem By: Jason George
Poetry

Well, I think it was Bubbly that commented on my poem Escape and she said it was much better to face reality and stop trying to escape from it, and I thought that the phrase "face reality" sounded cool, so I went along with it. I'd love to see what you readers think about the giant metaphor. View table of contents...

Bright and magical

Comforting and welcoming

A place I know

Oh, so well

Yet I must leave this

All that I'm familiar with

I must leave and

Face reality

=+=+=+=+=

I force myself out of my haven

Full of beauty and joy

Out into a world

Of logic and truth

This place is so foreign

It's uncomfortable, but real

I'm so out of my element, but I'm

Facing reality

+=+=+=+=+

This place, to me

Is so alien and strange

Even though I've dwelt here

All my life

After a long day, I enter my refuge again

My haven, my home

I know I have now

Faced reality

=+=+=+=+=

And it's not pretty

I think this will fit to almost everyone here on Booksie. I believe that almost all writers use writing as an escape. Or to bring life, better life, to their charactors. To bring their dreams and hopes and wishes to a sort of reality. I know I do. =) Awesome job with this one. =) Mandy

I definitely use writing to escape the real world. I love creating worlds where I decide what happens. It's comfortable to me. Thanks for your kind words! :)

ooo i liked this one a lot ^^ lets see, we leave our sanctuary and step out into the real world. we've grown up in it, we live in it, we know it - yet at the same time it still feels like a different place, especially when we "face reality", meaning we stop running from life's problems, step up to bat, and take a swing. i tend to explain things metaphorically, even when describing a metaphor -_-' hahahaha!
that last line was an interesting twist. it really brings the truth out. no one faces their problems and says "well that was just beautiful! lets do it again!" hahahaha! so thats why i love that last line b/c its the solid simple truth. when facing the bad and the ugly of life - it aint gonna be nice and easy. its going to be hard and troublesome and stressful. but c'est la vie!

excellent poem jason ^^

Well, thanks! And very good with the metaphor, and thanks for understanding the last line. I really wanted to bring the plain sense of reality. You're right, we never say that it was great, we always say it wasn't the best or whatever.

Thank you very much for taking the time to write that excellent comment! :)

I like the three part setup along with the additional line, a reflection on the journey of the previous stanzas. I think the last two stanzas were a little redundant. You could have put that one idea into one stazna and set up a resolution for a better connection with the line 'and it's not pretty'. Other than that, which are just my thoughts, good job.

Hmmm... I guess I really kinda wanted to get through the idea that the "reality" isn't really a comfortable place to be. But thanks for the honesty! Thanks for the criticism. :)

I really like this poem. I agree it is so much better to face the problem than to run away from it, but it's not always pleasant. I really like the way you've changed the tenses at the end the first 3 stanza 'face reality...facing reality...faced reality' - It gives the sense as though someone has accomplished something.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks! Like I've said before, I hate repetitive-ness, and only do it when I have to. I thought it would've been really creative to change the tenses.

Thanks, Olola. :)

Aw, thanks for the kind words! :)

Great job! The last line was perfect, and related very well to having to face reality. Love the poem, can't wait to read more! =)
