As I walked toward the end of the rainbow,
I saw a little girl lying in the field.
She said she was lost and needed help.
I thought of the gold waiting ahead,
But could not turn away from her scared face.
So I took her by the hand and led her home.
As I walked toward the end of the rainbow,
I saw an old man lying in the field.
He said he had nowhere to go.
I thought of the gold waiting ahead,
But could not leave him to die alone.
So I helped him find shelter and food.
As I walked toward the end of the rainbow,
I saw a small puppy lying in the field.
I could tell it was hungry and frightened.
I thought of the gold waiting ahead,
But I could escape the innocent whimpers,
So I carried the puppy back home.
When I made it to the of the rainbow,
All of the gold was gone.
An empty feeling rushed over me.
I walked back with my head hung low.
But when I reached home,
I had three visitors on my porch.
An old man was sitting in the rocking chair,
With an angelic little girl on his lap,
And a bouncy little puppy by his side.
I felt the emptiness being replaced
With love and gratefulness.
I had no doubt what I had done was right.
I sacrificed my wants to fulfill others needs;
And I was rewarded not with riches,
But with something far greater.
I had been given the love, trust,
And heartwarming smiles of three new friends.
