Papa held me when I was a child/ And the dusk cast shadows on the ground/ And the sun went down/ Purple twilight spread across the sky/ As the darkness raced into the west/ And I hid my face in Papa's chest/ His arms were strong and I was safe/ As long as he held on to me tight/ And I said daddy I'm afraid of the night? He held me closer and he said to me/ Now son there ain't a thing to fear/ Won't you look into the sky and listen here
When the night rolls around and the darkness comes to ground don't be afraid/ 'Cause when the sun goes down is when the stars come out to light the way/ And no they ain't as bright as the warm sunlight/ But son they will get you through the night/ Oh yes you're gonna find they get you through the night
When I was a young man and leaving all I knew/ To go out into the unknown/ I felt so afraid and alone/ Still feeling the pain from my first heartbreak/ With all kinds of problems on my mind/ I tried to leae 'em all behind/ Then there came a time when I was a fool/ It's how I grew to know the night/ And learned to say that everything will be allright/ And all through those long cold and lonely hours/ I remembered Papa's words/ Yeah I recalled 'em all just as I'd heard
When the night rolls around and the darkness comes to ground don't be afraid/ 'Cause when the sun goes down is when the stars come out to light the way/ And no they ain't as bright as the warm sunlight/ But son they will get you through the night/ Oh yes you're gonna find they get you through the night
Now that I am older with the years gone by/ I know what it is to lose your pride/ When everybody sees the things that you try to hide/ Like trying to find a reason jsut to smile/ When there's people all around/ So you ain't bringing anybody down/ Or trying to find the sunshine at twelve AM/ And you know I haven't found it yet/ But I'm gonna keep on trying you can bet/ And while I'm searching in the dark/ I'll turn my face up to the skies/ And sing my Daddy's song's reprise
When the night rolls around and the darkness comes to ground don't be afraid/ 'Cause when the sun goes down is when the stars come out to light the way/ And no they ain't as bright as the warm sunlight/ But son they will get you through the night/ Oh yes you're gonna find they get you through the night
