He steps between the cardboard flaps

Pulls them closed over his head

And then

A thousand colors and lights and pictures

Spilling from his brain

Filling up the cardboard box

Tumbling into the corners

Swelling the perforated edges

With different stories and places and times

In this one he drives a racecar

Speeding down the track

Pulling around a turn

On two cardboard corners

In this one he rides a spaceship

Into the atmosphere

Peering out of a cardboard window

At the stars and the milky way

In this one he sails the seven seas

Rolling over crashing swells

Calling to his cardboard crew

Of salty seamen

In this one he is just a boy

Playing alone in a cardboard box

Creating colors and lights and pictures

Different stories and places and times

From darkness
