The Race is not for the Swift
by julistar
So now I am finally aware
Of a true end in sight
giving purpose to the journey
my excitement for this race takes flight
***
You said this to me so often
I can remember the weight of your tone
It might have been the deepest thought you ever had
And you made it your gift to me alone
***
The race is not for the swift
No life is a quick joke
Nothing is gained from glossing over,
with magic mirrors and smoke
***
You lose before you start
when you cheat, when you undermine others
when you trip them so they fall
it is you that lags behind the other runners
***
This is not a fight to the finish, is it?
Ah, that's what you meant for me
to absorb on the harder laps
as the crowd booed and cheered alternately
***
You wanted me to feel my victory
in making others winners
by losing pride and jealousy
like all the other sinners
***
You wanted me to love without expectation
Enjoy the ride and taste the freedom
Thinking up for myself - my path, my goals
be patient as life leads on to wisdom
***
Now the race has already started
and the pace has been set
I am winded by some of the obstacles
but I'm so glad, I can still run
***
It's not over yet
