LAST FLIGHT

In Memory of “Holly” Whitten

Dedicated to “Grammy” Whitten

alt

Model of an actual plane he flew

alt

Actual photo of him (on left)from March 17, 1944

Flying high in the clouds,

Only a map in my hand.

Point me to my target,

A direct hit, my plan.

With my gunner back behind me,

Our mission set in stone.

Enemy planes all around us,

But yet we feel alone.

At 10,000 feet I see our mark,

I dive to set my sites.

The bomb beneath us I release,

My timing must be right.

Bullets flying all around us,

My gunner fires away.

The enemy now must stop us.

My instincts show me the way.

We hit our mark,

Mission only half complete.

Now I must get us home,

My gunner and me.

Even though I sit alone up front,

God is with me I can feel.

The dog fight I finally break away from.

The serenity is so real.

It’s quiet now,

Except the engine I hear.

I look left, then right.

I do this in fear.

Not all is coming home.

Some shot down I now see.

The Lord’s with them now.

They’re ALL heroes to me.

I do this for my country,

For our freedom I must fight.

Many missions claim success,

I try with all my might.

My country I did serve,

My duties now are done.

With metals I have earned,

Regrets….I have none.

I received many metals,

For serving my country with such pride.

With honor and dignity,

With God and my gunner, always at my side.

My comrades that fell,

Are the REAL heroes by far.

They died for their country.

“Yet I get the Star”?

“Medals are just medals”,

They’re not JUST for me.

I’m only one in the war,

That fought to be free.

Please don’t be sad,

My job here is done.

I’ve lived a great life,

But it’s time I move on.

A new dawn, a new day

I’m called once again.

For it’s my last journey.

And a new to begin.

Flying high in the clouds,

I soar in peace.

I feel no more pain now,

I’m so at ease.

I’m on my last flight.

I have wings on both sides.

No map this time, but Angels in hand,

God is with me on this last ride.

Pretty good.
This sounds more like a story than a poem to me, though.

It was good, I would do it a little shorter for a poem, but it really gives you the image of the scene, it is very well written. Well done.

Oh my gosh, this was amazing! The rhythm and flow was perfect, and not once did it skip a beat or jump a line. And I love the story you're telling, too. A noble man fighting for what he believes in. Great poem, you made me jealous! =D

This is great! I loved it

Wow, this is beautiful. It really captures what people would have thought back then. And what people think now, as well. After all, the ones that are heroes aren't always the ones that get the gratitude and happiness of stying alive. Even though people are more apt to remember people who lived after the battle, at least one person will know they will always be remembered. And that's this guy.

Great job, anyway. I'm glad you gave me that comment to check it out.

Your uncle wrote this? It's beautiful , very touching. The question of 'do I deserve these medals..?' always comes to mind, but either if you die in battle or survive, your still the hero. Thanks for posting it here!

Posted: Aug 8, 2008

Wow.
Intense and from the direct experience of dog fights.
Reminds me of Iron Maiden's 'Aces High'.
Cool poem.

That was amazing, it really shows how the soldiers, any soldiers in fact, feel about their commrades, and their fellow soldiers. I really enjoyed it. Tell your uncle wonderful job. and Thank you to all the soldiers out there who have fought for or are fighting for our freedom and the freedom of others. God bless America, with more than just prosperity, but with a great government, and wonderful men and women who would give their life to protect their fellow Americans. Anyone who can't understand this poem is a fool, I am fourteen and can see perfectly well wut is meant by this poem. Your uncle made it very clear. You must be very proud. It was wonderful of him to state clearly that not only is it those who live, but also those who have died that are the heroes. Not many people think of the dead as heroes, but, many times, those who are dead are those who are smart, cunning, and not afraid to die for their country. Now those are the true heroes. That doesn't mean that those who lived aren't, but, I think you get what I mean. Wonderful Job Uncle!
luv,
Mandie
Please read some of my works to, What Lies Behind the Truth and some more stuff I hope you enjoy it as much as you enjoyed this poem. I really hope you leave your comments and suggestions. Be as plain, rude, mushy, or whatever you want. I can take it. L.O.L.
once again, wonderful poem
luv ya'll

Touching! Very beautifully written... Nowhere it seems to be written by an ordinary person.

Very nice!

Very unending.
The lines reflect his determination.
Touching as it is though, the poem speaks well.

Good job.

A great poem, thanks for sharing, Ted

Posted: Aug 9, 2008

I like the style you wrote it in. With the exception of some sentence inversions, it sounded almost like a conversation, and explaination. Good job.

Posted: Aug 9, 2008

Descriptive... rebuilds the images as if you are the Gunman... reads simple. Thanks for sharing.

Posted: Aug 9, 2008

its really good.
I liked the last paragraph alot.

Posted: Aug 10, 2008

This actually made me cry. Tell the author I said it's beautiful. I only saw one mistake that irked me a bit. When you refer to an award it's spelled medal, not metal. That's the only thing though. It really was a beautiful poem. May he rest in peace.
