Perfection rests at the end of my bed
He stares out the window through round golden eyes
Looking to catch a glimpse of his past, present, future
His make-up, his basic need
A bird lands on a branch, and his head is up
Velvet and smooth chocolate, his ears prick forward
The speckles of his fur dance down his back as he tenses
Great muscles launch into action
His tail hits a point, then wiggles just a hair
He looks back at me with those round almond eyes
And says, “Mom, come help me catch the bird”
And I come, and I pet those soft velvety ears and whisper
Perfection you are, my pup
