The Red String

Poetry By: Lady Wolf

Sometimes the right thing to do is hardest.

There is a red string,

Which connects you and me.

It's tied around my heart,

Caught on the smile only you bring.

Storms come,

The sting tightens.

Waves crash,

Memories of you heighten.

Your children laugh,

Their happiness shatters me,

A woman embraces you,

And she is all you see.

But the string still holds,

Though it is sometimes strained.

It tightens on our hearts,

Decadent pleasure laced with pain.

The string draws me to you,

Though I dig in my heel,

Its security cuts deep,

With blood I can actually feel.

With shaking hands,

I grasp the string.

My eyes take in your protest,

Aware of the pain I'll bring.

With a cry,

I make the break,

Though I know it's best,

For both our sakes.

It lays in my hand,

Like a bird with broken wing,

I've released you my friend,

From my red string.
