The thoughts of an emotionally scarred soldier after war

The screaming in my head

And panic in my chest

And the rapid rising and falling of my shattered ribs

Told me I wasn't dead

The sharp pain in my left knee

And the rattle of my punctured lung

And the constant cracking of my broken collar bone

Told me I wasn't dead

The jigsaw puzzle memories

And the tenderness of my grazed heart

And the agony of my fractured shoulder blade

Told me I wasn't dead

Yet.
