Birthday Greeting For Brother Leo

Poem By: Manyfacets
Poetry

I found this buried in a stack of papers while sorting junk mail to be discarded.
It’s a Birthday rhyme for my Brother “Leo the Lion” written some time ago.
I’m adding it here because the rhyme application is for a “Leo” born in 1946
and thought that other folk might enjoy reading it. This rather long verse was
attached to a gift of music which I recorded onto a cassette from my rather large record collection. I often make Birth tapes for friends and family and usually
compose a rhyme to go with it. In this one; I worked in many of that year’s highlights to show an historical review of 1946. The facts outlined in the rhyme
were taken from News Headlines and Joel Whitburn’s (Billboard) Music facts.

Birthday Greeting for Brother Leo

The store bought cards are short and sweet
obviously designed for any man on the street
this one is different and full of corn
and loaded with information about the
year were born

The story unfolds in the year nineteen-forty-six
for it found our dear Mother in quite a fix
the war had ended; we had to make room
‘cause this was the start of the baby boom

Veterans returned from the unholy war
and families the world over were happy once more
abundance of staples like sugar and tea
were no longer rationed to others and we

The United States President was Harry Truman
and he did his best by all that was human
In Fulton Missouri, Churchill made his speech
about the Iron Curtain and the Communist Breach

The United Nations needed a very permanent residence
and $85 million was donated without any hesitance
He made big headlines for such a project to enter
I’m talking about Rockefeller and his magnificent centre

From a global perspective, forty-six focused attentions
on Atomic Energy and the Xerox invention
the cold war raged on; even through a truce
and Dr. Benjamin Spock wrote a book of no use

The Swing-Era ended the Big Bands broke up
fans the world over wished the leaders good luck
Goodbye to Dorsey, Goodman, James and Brown
all Leaders of Bands that are truly Renowned

The lush movie that year gave us great fun
with never to be forgotten, “Annie Get Your Gun”
Three great tunes became quite a hit
so listen to your disk to hear some of it

Most of the tunes will sound kind of funny
‘cause you were still in your mommy’s tummy
On August the 9th we were full of joy
because along with the hits; came our only boy

The day you arrived so cute and bald
had us all rejoicing to the family we called
Mom and Dad were so proud of their Son
and couldn’t wait to show you to everyone

You are probably wondering if I’ll ever get through
making up verses and rhyming for you
oh, by the way you’re turning age forty-seven
I do hope these tunes put you in seventh heaven

“You’re Hit Parade” tune of the day you popped out
was the biggest hit of the year; there’s no doubt.
“To Each His Own” was the name of the track
and “Eddy Howard’s” version was on top of the stack

Three other versions also charted that year
one is missing; the other’s you’ll hear
“Freddy Martin is on the delinquent disk
and I’ve added his tune to my hard to find list

“Frank Sinatra” recorded “Oh What It Seemed To Be”
and that is the version not available to me
Nineteen songs peaked at number one
and seventeen are included for mom’s only Son

Well Brother dear here is the truth
these little tunes are the songs of your youth
your History Lesson may have pops and ticks
but that’s how they sounded back in i946

So Happy Birthday “O” Brother of one
with all good wishes for the years to come
in this little Greeting I’m attempting to send Ya’
Along with hugs and kisses from

your
Sister Brenda
