I met a swan earlier today.

I meet you in the desolate shades of soil and wire
With the expectation of loneliness and hope of reprieve
Eyed in mutual suspicion, two travellers interrupted
My heart is empty and yours full
Perhaps you could spare some?
We sail together on a journey to nowhere
I horrify you with tales of life in holes and darkness
But be reassured I am the only one who finds it so
You tell me of the open seas and infinite skies
I'm afraid I barely understand your words
I never thought I could bear witness to something so pure
And nor did you
I never thought not to be scared of the light
Until I met you
The bridge is upon us like a steel net
And wordlessly you sail away with a straight neck
And I return to my home of holes and darkness
Lighting no candles, yet they appear behind me as I walk
I never gave you a name
