Today I read your letters from New York
as though they contained the ocean
they crossed to reach me here
sat alone.

And when I close my eyes such images
fill my head that I find myself stood
next to you looking at the Starry
Night in wonder.

Through your words I take each tentative
step you take, I feel each rain drop,
chase each cloud until my eyes are filled
with your tears.

And so through your letters from New York
I feel closer than the miles suggest,
and follow you through your weather beaten
words.

thanks, the best part of one of the letters was how she was blown away by the art work of van gogh, especially the starry night. im always amazed how words can transport us through time and space

the letters said many beautiful things from a very beautiful person, my poetry could never do them justice

I like the last line, has some real depth to it

thanks, do you find the last line is the hardest to write,

Oh...I just figured you out...you use subtle action words that keeps the river flowing.

I have many many "letters" like this and have never thought to share them as poetry (i mean thoughts)...

You've filled me visually and that is one of my favorite things. Thank You.

thanks agian. wow, if my poetry as filled one person visually then it's been worth writing. it's wonderful to inspire and be inspired, i think thats why we write.

Wow, my favorite part was " I feel each rain drop,
chase each cloud until my eyes are filled
with your tears." That is really moving.

This is really beautiful Matthew. It is surprising how close we can feel to someone through a letter (the reall kind not the computer email thing though that seems to be the way of today) Lovely images.

thanks, you are so right, i receive emails from the person who wrote the letters but they are brief and impersonal, where as the letters she sends me are beautiful, powerful and so full of meaning. we also seem to delete emails from time to time, where as letters we keep!

I can spell real! Sorry.

haha, its these darn computers, much easier to write by hand!

So when I ready our comment I went straight to this poem of yours. I understand what you mean, here the letter is the communication that makes you feel closer to the person.
The ending is just beautiful - your weatherbeaten words, it really suggests the journey that letter took to get to you.

thanx so much for a lovely comment.

The phrasing of this poem is so vivid! When ever I read a poem inspired or written for somebody I always wonder if the writer gave it to that person? If you did I'm sure she must have loved it. It's really wonderful work Matt.

This is so amazing. Beautiful. Heartfelt. Everything. Lovely, lovely work, matthew. Every one of your writings intrigue me more and more upon each read.

Very sweet Matt, reading your poetry is like you allowing us to see parts of you, the best parts (not that there are any bad parts) and it's a pleasure reading something that is so obviously close to your heart. Words can say so much, and you prove it! Another great piece. ~ Nixie

Thank u again. When i read letters from someone very close i almost live every word. So i feel all the joy and happiness, but also their pain. Either way my eyes are filled with tears!!

You certainly take a different angle at things that keeps the reader refreshed and attentive, I liked it;) You took me there with you and with her...'stood next to you looking at the starry night in wonder'

I have started loving your writings ...reminds me of all the times sanjib was away on conference etc and i would paint and draw...and write really really long letters...never tried a poem though...he says he doesnot understand the poems...lol...

i used to spend all my pocket money sending him cards and letters...
GOSH, that used to be so magical...why does things change after marriage??

Mathew, can u write something about couples ( married) to ignite the lost spark...? I am sure u would be able to do some magic with words like u always do

Thank you for your kind words. Letters like poems are so full of emotions and images that to me they are very similar. I felt so much the emotions in this letter that i just had to write the poem.
