By M. E. Riddle

We are swimmingly taught

Deep in the ocean

How to embrace rock

To ignore emotion.

Coiled, poised, cool

Upon a seaside throne

Are Nature's tools

Made of salt and bone.

Submerge, roast,

Somewhere in nowhere

Very old, very cold

Bloody thorny scale.

Reptilian grandmother tanks

Loom watching time leave

Bathed in Equatorial sun

Caught in latitude freeze.

We are ancient history

Deep in the mind of Darwin

Mate with water, mate with land

Delivered to the strand.

We are a plant-a whisper

A once-upon-a-time picture

Chronicle of time

Gone in our prime.
