The day you opened your eyes,

I looked at you with surprise.

You are a part of me

yet you feel new to me

Holding your little finger,

I hold back the tears.

Tears of joy and love

that will bind me and you for years.

I watch you sleep in my arms,

making those small gurgle sounds.

I wonder what it is about you

that makes my heart jump and pound.

Is it the way you smile,

at all our curious faces

Or is the way you cry

as we make silly noises.

Is it the color of your fresh skin?

Or is it the scent of your babyhood?

Think as much as I might,

I couldn't think of anything as good.

Thoughts come and go,

which confuse my mind.

If now it is one reason

then the next is of a better kind.

I thought and thought

and had some theories compiled

But in the end it struck me that;

it is simply because you're my lovely child!
