until your heart can run

you climbed into a basement
down a narrow path of stairs
you found yourself all bundled
in an overcoat of cares

it's hard for you to see
that you're entitled to some fun
and we'll be taking baby steps
until your heart can run

your heart was set on 3 A.M.
the darkest time of night
you would not give the time of day
to rays of purest light

the night for you is ending
you await the rising sun
and we'll be taking baby steps
until your heart can run

you felt besieged by strangers
who could never know your heart
although you'd sometimes smile at them
you felt light years apart

your demons are diminished now
your freedom will be won
and we'll be taking baby steps
until your heart can run

when i found you that wondrous day
i knew that we were meant
to be together, arm in arm
yes, you were heaven sent

encircled by my love now
not by chains that weighed a ton
and we'll be talking baby steps
until your heart can run
