it really wasn't much at first

to martha, like a dream
like somewhere in the house next door
a teapot making steam
perhaps it was her hearing
that was altered in some way
she was quite new to pregnancy
it changed you, people say
most times she wouldn't hear it
but when things would quiet down
sometimes she would be conscious
of a soft and subtle sound
and it seemed to have a lilt to her
a rise and drop of pitch
perhaps some strange hormonal thing
or some cerebral glitch
and as she did her housework
she would sing her favorite song
and now it was appearing
that her body sang along
she'd listen quite intently
and she soon began to see
than coming from within her
was a distant melody
that night she told her husband
as quite close to her he loomed
he said "this may sound crazy...
but its coming from your womb"
next day she saw the doctor
and with stethoscope, he leaned
he blinked and then acknowledged
"yes, its yellow submarine"
he said he'd never heard of that
there must be something wrong
twas no existing precedence
of embryos in song
the doctor was quite shaken
and he left the room, confused
but martha was delighted
and excited and amused
and as the days continued
she could hear the singing well
and now the little melody
was clearer than a bell
they'd sing the tune in rhythm
sometimes hubby would join in
and softly in between
the little voice came from within
there was no explanation
but you should not question joy
why couldn't there be singing
from an unborn girl or boy ?
and one night, in bed a-laying
as the quiet settled in
she clearly heard a second voice
beginning to chime in
