i would have bet

that we would be
two old men in a park
exchanging dusty memories
of days of youth and spark
when women were mysterious
but oh, are they not yet ?
i thought i would grow old with you
i guess i lost that bet
i would have bet
that we would be
two old men in a bar
examining what fools we'd been
while reaching for the stars
two men in their advancing years
drinking whiskey, older yet
i thought i would grow old with you
i guess i lost that bet
i would have bet
that we would be
two men exchanging gifts
jogging our shared memories
when thoughts began to drift
do you remember our first beer ?
or our first cigarette ?
i thought i would grow old with you
i guess i lost that bet
i would have bet
that we would be
two faces lined with age
who'd seen our lives evolving
like a novel's turning page
two men who'd shared a sunrise
and now watched it start to set
i thought i would grow old with you
i guess i lost that bet
i would have bet
that we would be
tight comrades to the end
two men as close as brothers
who would call each other friend
although you went before me
i believe i've won that bet
for in my heart you're living
and i feel your presence yet
