i always wore an armor

for love never could be trusted
you let it in...it tore your world apart
but when we met
i found that rusty armor, i adjusted
so you could put your hand around my heart
for love was just a foreign word
i spat or vaguely mumbled
an actor memorizing wooden lines
but when i sang that word to you
it rang out as it tumbled
like a message sent inside a valentine
all the circumstances in my life
confirmed my way of thinking
that the colors in my life were black and white
but you opened up my eyes
inside of slits, they now are twinkling
for the colors of your love are rainbow bright
i never was the kind
that was in love with my reflection
the person in the mirror glared at me
you let me view myself
with quite the genuine affection
and glimpse the inner beauty i now see
my love had sat around
like some old dusty decoration
forgotten on some dark and lofty shelf
i found my independence
wrapped inside your declaration
by loving you, i learned to love myself
