conception of the future
is a dicey game at best
some guessers have been lucky
millions more have failed the test
we throw the dart in blackness
knowing not where it will go
and splash into the vast expanse
of inky indigo
yesterday begins with "yes"
tomorrow ends with "ow"
you're positive what happened then
and then you're forced to bow
the future is your master
and you're captive to it's flow

you think you seek your fortune
but your fortune's stalking you
and makes a pretzel of your plans
and twists to something new
although we've lost our target
off a-hunting we will go

so what is it i'm saying ?
do we just live life in chance ?
and jump into the fracas
every time we're asked to dance
i always jump in quickly
without dipping in my toe
