i can HEAR them

i thought i sensed invisibirds

but that was not the case
i sought the sound of singing
but no birdies anyplace
those lovely emanations
lamentations, weary cries
those startled exclamations
jubilation's lovely sighs
i thought i sensed invisibirds
a shadow seemed to lurk
i peeked with eyes akimbo
but it didn't seem to work
as if in marching columns
they were solemn, sad and stark
their voices ever mingling
softly tingling in the dark
i thought i sensed invisibirds
it must have been a trick
a sleight-of-hand, uncanny
as performed by wizard, quick
imaginary chorus
was it for us mortal men ?
a sonnet, hypnotizing
now it's rising up again
i thought i sensed invisibirds
i heard a symphony
and though i might have missed them
i am sure they noticed me
it seemed that they were peering
eyes were steering towards my face
like they were now my master
ever faster was their pace
i thought i sensed invisibirds
but as that question hung
i realized at last
it was the flowers that had sung
