she stood upon the shoreline
with her toes in dampened sand
searching the horizon
for a hint of distant lands
she knew that out there somewhere
was the country of her birth
but sight of it was hidden
by the curvature of earth
but faith had been her virtue
so she chose a guiding star
and tried to swim to china
but she never got that far
