seeking heaven

i'm waiting at the golden gate
it's heaven that i seek
for i've been told that earth
will be the heirloom to the meek
how strange to be above the clouds
the ground so far below
a little angel led the way
and told me where to go
i thought i'd see saint peter
but in fact, there's no one here
i know it's where i'm meant to be
beyond that, it's not clear
i see no doorbell i could ring
nor knocker i could rap
perhaps the keeper of the gate
has left to take a nap
the lord helps those who help themselves
in that, no sacrilege
i finally enter heaven
diving headlong off the bridge
