are eyes our face's jewelry ?
a gateway to our souls ?
or just a strange contraption
full of rods and cones and holes ?
for some, a way of looking out
for some, for looking in
and hid while we are sleeping
by a curtain made of skin
a well for gazing deeply ?
or a wall to hold things back ?
a look of "please come closer" ?
maybe one of "i'll attack" ?
a soft bouquet of lashes
with a gem tucked underneath
with powers of attraction
if one offers to bequeath
but lately when i see you
it's your eyes that you avert
i feel them running from me
while they used to dance and flirt
you think your eyes are better
with their lovely ocean hue ?
well, scallops can have forty eyes
and all of them are blue
