My English teacher asked for a poem about what poetry is to us. This was mine.

Stutter Something Profound

Dream a dream of ebony, carved in ivory ink,

Then a dream a dream of darkness, into which you will sink,

Now dream about a blazing light, cutting through despair,

Then put it down on paper, and poetry is there.

Think about a fire, blazing in the night,

Think about men and women, who in shadows fight;

Then find your courage, and then stand up too,

And you will find…the poem within you.

It's not about the rhythm; it's not about the rhyme,

And it's not about forgetting others past your time.

It's not about a reason; it's about a choice,

It's about finding; within you there's a voice.

Picture a dress, dyed in red,

Picture a family with a mother dead.

Picture all the sorrow, picture all the grief,

Then find the words, and in writing find relief.

Envision a warmth, spreading within,

Envision a hand; a lover's grin.

Envision all the joy that you've ever felt,

Then write it down so icy hearts will melt.

It's not about the rhythm; it's not about the rhyme,

And it's not about forgetting others past your time.

It's not about a reason; it's about a choice,

It's about finding; within you there's a voice.

Remember the worst thing to you that was done,

Then change the past and tell how you won.

It's not a lie, this I know to be true,

For no longer has the wronged been you.

Recall the past, in every form,

What turns you cold; what keeps you warm.

Recall the moments in which you live,

Now praise your triumphs, and your mistakes, forgive.

It is in the tempest, it is in the flow

It is in the telling, from stories you will grow.

It is in the ending, it is in the start

It is in the coming from the bottom of your heart.
