A one sided relationship with a beggar boy at the traffic light

THE LIGHT BOY

His shattered gaze and broken smile

Confronted me at the traffic light

Not a day we missed our date

Not a day I accepted his smile

How could I, from my exalted seat up high?

Caught-up in my own plots to gather shine

I never did share even a dime

While I could never comprehend

the hardships that he’d been dealt

I never took a break from whine

But he endured his suffering just fine

One sad sunny day he was gone

No more there to prick on my brow

Nor beg me with his pleading howls

I wondered aloud, what was my crime?

Was it coz I refused him those damn dimes?
