To the Protector

Poetry By: Riuku

My brother turns 15 today, almost 4 years younger than I am. This is for you. I know you hate reading and I know you don't speak to me much, but I love you. To me, growing a year old is growing a year closer to death. But I know how much you value everything you get on your birthday, so I think that alone is reason to celebrate.

Given time I've found

Just one thing:

Where I go,

You follow.

When I dream,

You follow.

You are my passenger,

So I drive steadily.

Both hands on the wheel

Both eyes on the road;

Funnily enough...

You encourage me to look everywhere.

Sometimes I can afford a glance.

And when I cannot,

I ask that you forgive me.

The truth is that you cannot follow

One day, Papa will be gone.

I may not be there, either.

So stand.

You have always protected us

By keeping us together.

When I am silent

Know that I have you in mind.

When I am angry

Know that I criticize myself; not you.

When I am sad

Know that I will do better.

And when I am absent,

Know that you must do better.
