The Phoenix

If I could walk to the top of every mountainAnd gaze upon every moonlit lakeTo a peacefulness serenity and isolation from the painThe pulling force of concrete bricks with a narrow centre of gravityLeaning like a threatening hawk watching over his prayFear, anxiety, shame to who or what may cause itTheir insecurity shielded from public scrutinyAll self-despisement vanished but only for a moment When placed upon a face picked out from the crowdHer eyes hold the key to the pastIndications of previous abuse lingeredIn sad sky blue shadesFrequently filled with secret pain filled tearsAbsorbed by the skin once sliced with bladesTo let the badness outThere was a time when being bubbly came naturallyFrom within, and popularity was one of the perks Of a quiet confidence that soothed The pounding pulses of many pursuing admirersBut her broken smile captured by Da VinchiTells a harrowing taleThat beyond the poised exteriorLies a little girl internally bleedingFrom someone no one ever really knewDeeply disturbed, and plotting future attacksA distraction from her parent’s disappointmentShe was never good enoughPerfection was expected by the happy coupleBut behind closed doorsThe silver spoon fed baby blocked out the noiseWhen violence reared his ugly headHer well-respected father took out the stresses of his office jobHer mother beaten to a pulp informs inquisitive neighboursAbout her third fall down the stairs in a monthCaused by her supposed sleepwalkingShe lies in bed cold and stiffWith no good night kiss or bed bug warningShaken suddenly by vibrations of the slamming doorHer mothers fear seeps through the crack in the wallAs the monster returns in an intoxicated bubbleFragile it could burst at any momentAt the sound of anyone questioning his earlier actionsWho am I to stop this scared, unloved little girlFrom releasing her own vented pain Her unaccomplished dreams and high expectationsAmounted to nothing worth mentioningHer obituary pre written by teachers at schoolCould have done so much better if only she applied herselfThe pain kept me down during the awkward stageBit like a phoenix I rose from the ashesStronger now than ever beforeMotivated, passionate and capable of finding true love A caring companion for the luckyWho have felt so much painOnce grabbed on to the certain eventualityThat was the big escapeNow an unsung hero To all who are scalded and burnedBy selfish childrenSaddened by their own disgraceBy S Purcell
