I Am Darkness

Poetry By: Sara Battaglia

Sometimes I can't help the dark thoughts about myself. What am I?

I am no child of God's light

I am the spawn of Satan

I am the snake in the Garden of Eden,

The temptation driving you to sin

I am the battle you cannot win

The Helen of Troy that started the war

A siren that leads you astray on your journey.

I am no muse, no hero

Am I even human?

I am the plague, the silent killer in your sleep

I am the fear in your throat,

That feeling in the pit of your stomach

When all you know comes crashing down.

I am all the wrong choices, the bad decisions you have made in your life

I am a robber of affection

The harbringer of heartbreaks

I am the water you cannot drink,

And the branch of fruit you cannot reach

I am the noose around your neck

The terrible thoughts that creep into your mind late at night

I am the voice that you hear in the back of your head

Telling you you're not good enough.

I am the reaper come to take you away from everything you know

I am a figment of your imagination,

All the good things you want me to be

The fleeting hand you cannot grasp

With hollow eyes I gaze onto thee

No emotion, just a blank stare

I am a mirage, the feeling of disappointment when you get too close

Watch me vanish,

Retreating into the shadows

I am the face you see in the crowd, only to be lost forever

I am the drugs in your system,

And the poison rushing through your veins.

See I was once like you,

The victim

But now I am the culprit, a bad omen if you will,

Of the darkness of my mind

This is the other half of me

I fail to hide.
